Sigiriya Kingdom: 8th wonder of the world
Gaze upon the Eighth Wonder of the World
The ancient city of Sigiriya is a giant rock fortress, with the most iconic silhouette of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by thick jungle on all sides, it is also known as the Lion Rock due to its imposing lion-like features – visitors begin their ascent through the remnants of a massive lion’s mouth, flanked by the lion’s giant stone paws which remain in good condition. Sigiriya’s history is both rich and violent. King Kasyapa seized the throne by killing his own father and fled to Sigiriya atop where he built his palace. During the king’s reign, Sigiriya flourished as the capital city of the country, showcasing remarkable engineering and artistic brilliance that endure to this day. At the summit lie the remains of the royal palace where its ancient gardens, ponds and alleys can still be found. Inside, beautiful frescoes adorn the walls – of topless maidens said to be the king’s wives and concubines, or priestesses. Another of Sigiriya’s most intriguing features is the Mirror Wall – a polished rock face that once reflected the king’s own face – and is now etched with centuries-old poetry and graffiti left by visitors of the past. This historical monument is often hailed as the Eighth Wonder of the World and remains the most popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.
