Bird Watching Hotspots in Sri Lanka – Guided Tours

Discover the Wings of Sri Lanka

Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top birdwatching destinations. As a tropical country, Sri Lanka boasts a remarkable variety of exotic bird species. With diverse landscapes—ranging from forests and wetlands to mountains and grasslands—the island is home to over 400 bird species, including 236 breeding residents and 33 endemic species, such as the Sri Lankan Junglefowl, Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, and Serendib Scops Owl. Due to our location in the middle of the Indian Ocean, we are the southernmost landmass and a vital resting point for migratory birds escaping colder countries; therefore, over 200 migratory species travel to Sri Lanka every year to escape the harsh winters of the North, even from as far away as Siberia. Sri Lanka has 22 prime birdwatching sites to offer nature lovers and bird enthusiasts. While national parks provide the best viewing experience within a single location, there are several forests and mountain ranges that offer unique sightings while on hikes and treks. To make the most of your visit, we recommend exploring with a knowledgeable naturalist who can identify and share insights about the different species you encounter. Sri Lanka is a renowned destination among seasoned birdwatchers. If you’ve never tried birdwatching in Sri Lanka, it is a highly rewarding experience - one that offers solitude and seclusion and a deep connection with nature.
