Yala National Park Safari Tours, Wildlife & Lodges
A Front-Row Seat to the Animal Kingdom
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s second-largest national park and one of the country’s top must-visit destinations, home to some of its most iconic wildlife species. Alongside Wilpattu National Park, it is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Located in the southeast of the island, over 300 km from the airport, Yala is spread out across a vast area within the dry zone. However, its sheer size allows for diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense jungles to freshwater lakes. Yala is probably the best place in Sri Lanka to witness our resident wildlife in their natural habitat. The park is home to sloth bears, Asian elephants, crocodiles, deer, monkeys, and an incredible variety of bird species. But its most famous residents are the leopards—one of the crown jewels of our wildlife. Yala is believed to have the highest density of leopards per square kilometre in the world, making it one of the best places for leopard sightings. A safari here offers a higher-than-average chance of spotting these usually elusive creatures. At Yala awaits an incomparable wildlife experience, which is highly recommended for all visitors to Sri Lanka. While the park is accessible year-round, it is best to avoid the monsoon season due to the possibility of floods and landslides. Camping inside the park is also available for those seeking an even more immersive experience. There is truly no greater feeling than witnessing these majestic creatures roam freely in their natural home. Yala National Park is also sometimes referred to as Ruhunu National Park.
